San Antonio Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Fatal Hit-and-Run That Killed Pedestrian

Jonathan Acosta

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A San Antonio man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian on the city's west side.

On July 1, Judge Jennifer Peña of the 290th District Court sentenced 41-year-old Jonathan Acosta for leaving the scene of a collision that resulted in the death of 55-year-old Raul Peña Jr.

According to prosecutors, the crash occurred on the evening of June 3, 2024, as Peña and his son were crossing the access road of Loop 1604 on San Antonio's west side.

Authorities said Acosta's vehicle struck Peña before Acosta fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Investigators identified Acosta's vehicle through surveillance footage, vehicle debris recovered from the crash scene, and witness statements. Prosecutors said Acosta later admitted he was driving the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Michael Sani and Ross Lewis prosecuted the case with assistance from Victim Advocate Fabia Moralez and Investigator Jose Niño.

"When a driver flees the scene of an accident, it not only demonstrates a blatant disregard for human life but also prolongs the suffering of victims and their families," Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. "I am grateful for the hard work of our local law enforcement partners and our prosecution team in achieving a conviction in this case."
