SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A Bexar County jury has sentenced a landlord to 45 years in prison for orchestrating a scheme that led to the fatal shooting of one of his former tenants.
On Tuesday, June 30, 62-year-old Peter Balraj was convicted and sentenced in the 290th District Court for the murder of Christopher Vargas.
In addition to the murder conviction, Balraj was found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
According to prosecutors, Balraj conspired in December 2022 with his daughter's boyfriend, Joshua Walls, and Walls' roommate, Adrian Gomez, to intimidate Vargas into paying overdue rent and vacating the property.
On Dec. 18, 2022, a confrontation occurred at the residence involving Walls, Gomez, and Vargas. During the encounter, Gomez fatally shot Vargas.
Both Walls and Gomez were convicted and sentenced earlier this year for their roles in the killing.
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Brandon Ramsey and Ross Lewis prosecuted the case with assistance from Victim Advocate Amanda Vasquez and Investigator Jose Niño.
"Today's sentencing represents a commitment to the safety and well-being of our community by taking a stand against violence," Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement. "Thank you to the prosecution team and the jury's unwavering commitment to ensuring justice was sought."
