Driver Killed After High-Speed Crash, Vehicle Fire in Castroville

CASTROVILLE, Texas — A 20-year-old man was killed early Sunday after his vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire, according to the Castroville Police Department.

Officers responded around 3:08 a.m. April 26, 2026, to the 800 block of U.S. Highway 90 East following a report of a single-vehicle crash.

Prior to the crash, police said officers were alerted to a vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed near a Walmart along Highway 90. Shortly after, Medina County dispatch received a call reporting a vehicle had struck a tree.

When officers arrived, they found a black Dodge Durango that had collided with a tree and caught fire.

Authorities said Officer Thomas quickly extinguished the flames. The driver was found inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as 20-year-old Roman Barron. Officials said next of kin has been notified.

Investigators believe speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office and Medina County EMS assisted at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
