SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday for the murder of his partner, an 81-year-old man, in San Antonio.
Judge Kristina Escalona, presiding in the 186th District Court, sentenced Alberto Ferrer Cabrera to serve time in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the killing of Donald Atha Weynandt.
Authorities said the crime came to light on Feb. 1, 2025, when Cabrera confessed to a 911 dispatcher, his landlord, and responding detectives that he had killed Weynandt, his partner and common-law husband. Investigators determined Weynandt died after suffering a fatal cut to the throat with a knife.
According to investigators, Cabrera did not provide a clear motive for the killing, stating only that he felt “stressed” about transporting his 4-year-old son from Colombia to the United States.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Brittany Mitchell and Angela Payne of the Family Violence Division, with support from Victim Advocate Marina Winter and Investigator Yvette Guerrero.
“Mr. Weynandt deserved to live out his life in safety and dignity,” said District Attorney Joe Gonzales. “Our office remains committed to holding those who commit acts of violence fully accountable.”
