A traffic stop on Interstate 10 led to the discovery of multiple high-powered firearms and the arrest of a woman now facing federal charges.
On March 14, 2026, investigators with the Central Texas Interdiction Unit, along with Kerr County and Kendall County sheriff’s deputies, stopped a vehicle traveling westbound on I-10.
Authorities said the driver, identified as 45-year-old Sunshine Puentes-Rivas of Chihuahua, Mexico, provided inconsistent information about her travel plans during the stop.
Investigators requested consent to search the vehicle, which was granted. During the search, deputies located four Barrett .50 caliber rifles. Officials said two of the firearms had serial numbers removed.
Puentes-Rivas was arrested and charged with being an alien in possession of a firearm. Additional federal firearms charges are pending.
Officials noted that charges may be updated as the case progresses and that all suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Sheriff Larry Leitha said the case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation, noting that coordinated efforts help prevent illegal firearms from being transported beyond U.S. borders.
