Train Strikes 18-Wheeler Carrying Ambulances in Schertz

SCHERTZ, Texas — A train collided with an 18-wheeler hauling two Acadian ambulances Monday afternoon after the truck became stuck on railroad tracks at a busy intersection, according to the Schertz Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at 2:27 p.m. to the intersection of Schertz Parkway and FM 78 after receiving a report that the tractor-trailer was immobilized on the tracks. About a minute later, authorities were notified that a train had struck the vehicle.

Police said there were no reported injuries, and the train did not derail.

The driver was able to exit the truck before impact and contacted Union Pacific using the emergency number posted at the crossing. Officials said that quick action likely prevented serious injuries.

The intersections at Schertz Parkway will remain closed while repairs are made to damaged crossing barriers. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes until the crossing is reopened.

The incident remains under investigation. Schertz Police are working alongside Union Pacific and various state and federal agencies.

Authorities also used the incident as a reminder to drivers about railroad safety.

“It is essential to obey low crossing warning signs and signals at railroad crossings,” police said in a statement. “Always stop, look, and listen. Trains cannot stop quickly. If you find yourself stuck on the tracks, leave your vehicle immediately and call 9-1-1.”
