SAN MARCOS, Texas - A 12-year-old boy is recovering from visible injuries today after his father was arrested for a violent assault on Archers Way in San Marcos. The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) responded to the scene late Saturday night following reports of a physical disturbance.
Deputies arrived at the residence at approximately 10:00 PM on January 10, 2026. According to the preliminary investigation, a physical altercation occurred between the suspect and his 12-year-old son.
The suspect allegedly struck the child multiple times in the face, causing visible trauma. The assault escalated to strangulation, with investigators stating the father impeded the child’s breathing and circulation.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Guadalupe County Jail. He was identified as 34-year-old Larry Vela III. Vela currently faces three serious felony charges under the Texas Penal Code:
Injury to a Child: A charge that covers intentional bodily injury to a minor.
Continuous Violence Against the Family: Under Section 25.11, this charge is applied when a suspect commits two or more domestic assault offenses within a 12-month period, indicating a pattern of abuse.
Assault – Impeding Breath or Circulation: Specifically targeting the act of strangulation.
Sheriff Joshua Ray issued a stern warning regarding the safety of children within the county, emphasizing that domestic violence will be met with aggressive prosecution.
“This was a violent and inexcusable act against a child,” said Sheriff Ray. “Anyone who harms a child will be held fully accountable. We will not tolerate child abuse in this county, and we will aggressively pursue justice for victims.”
The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to investigating this case and determining if there are other victims or prior unreported incidents involving the suspect.
