San Antonio Man Sentenced to 30 Years for 2024 Parking Lot Murder

Terry Johnson

SAN ANTONIO, TX - A Bexar County judge has sentenced a San Antonio man to three decades in prison for a fatal shooting that claimed the life of Demarion Smith.

On Monday, January 5, 2026, Judge Benjamin Robertson of the 226th District Court sentenced 57-year-old Terry Alonzo Johnson to 30 years in prison for Smith’s murder. The case stems from an April 2024 incident when officers responded to reports of a shooting in progress and found Smith’s body in a parking lot. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his back and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several months after the shooting, Johnson admitted to firing the shots during an interview with investigators, claiming he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors said that claim was contradicted by video evidence collected during the investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Raul Jordan and Cassandra Rosales of the Criminal Trial Division, with support from Victim Advocate Brandy Jimenez and Investigator George Felan.

“We are grateful that justice has been served in this case,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Demarion’s family and hope this verdict can bring some measure of closure.”

Smith’s death and the subsequent conviction mark the conclusion of a case that prosecutors described as both tragic and preventable.
