San Antonio police have arrested 19-year-old Ethan Michael Gonzales in connection with a violent multi-vehicle crash on July 17, 2025, that left five people dead and fifteen others seriously injured. The crash happened on the southbound lanes of IH-35 at Cassin Road in southwest San Antonio.
Investigators say Gonzales was driving a stolen white Chevrolet Camaro at speeds over 100 miles per hour while weaving through traffic before colliding with an 18-wheeler and a bus carrying passengers. Four people were seen fleeing from the Camaro after the impact. Two died at the scene, and three more died after being taken to the hospital.
Detectives spent months working to identify the driver. DNA recovered from the Camaro matched Gonzales. Investigators also obtained Ring camera footage that showed him at a nearby apartment complex shortly after the crash, and his cellphone location data placed him at the scene at the time of the collision.
Gonzales was taken into custody at his home on Wednesday, November 26, with assistance from SAPD’s Traffic Investigation Unit, Homicide Unit, Covert Unit, the U.S. Marshals, and the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.
He is charged with five counts of manslaughter and five counts of hit-and-run involving death, with additional felony charges pending.
The three other individuals who fled from the Camaro have been identified. They are charged with Burglary of a Vehicle and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. Authorities do not anticipate crash-related charges for them at this time.
The case remains under investigation.
