Guadalupe County Animal Shelter Moves Forward Following Friends of Dogs Exit

Seguin, TX - The Guadalupe County Animal Shelter is continuing its operations after Friends of Dogs Rescue Organization decided to end its involvement with the facility. The organization, which had partnered with the shelter to assist in animal care, informed the sheriff’s office that it would withdraw, citing a desire for positive changes to benefit the animals in the shelter’s care.

Sheriff Ray and his command staff, who oversee shelter operations, acknowledged the contributions of Friends of Dogs over the years but emphasized that the shelter remains committed to its mission. Plans are already underway to enhance infrastructure, improve services, and expand programs including fostering, adoption, spay/neuter initiatives, and volunteer coordination. The sheriff has also authorized exploring potential partnerships with adult probationers and inmate programs to support shelter operations.

Over the past several months, Sheriff Ray had met with Friends of Dogs representatives to address concerns raised by both the community and shelter staff, including issues with social media messaging and collaboration practices. Despite a mutual commitment to better communication, Friends of Dogs ultimately chose to end its involvement.

“This was not the outcome we hoped for. We were open and committed to working with Friends of Dogs and any rescue or volunteer organization that shares our vision and supports our mission,” Sheriff Ray said. “Our personnel strive daily to serve our citizens and care for the animals to the best of their ability with the resources we have. I will not sit back and allow anyone to mischaracterize the exceptional work our employees do.”

The shelter remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and volunteers and community partners are encouraged to continue supporting its efforts. Sheriff Ray affirmed that the shelter will continue to prioritize the well-being of every animal in its care and pursue planned improvements to expand its services.
