Former Professor Sentenced to 30 Years for Possession of Child Pornography in San Antonio

Defendant: Troy Mishler

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A Bexar County judge has sentenced former University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) professor Troy Mishler to 30 years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Judge Stephanie Boyd of the 187th District Court handed down the sentence this week for one count of Possession of Child Pornography of a child younger than ten years of age (involving more than 500 visual depictions) and one additional count of Possession of Child Pornography Video.

Case Details and Confession

The investigation began after Mishler, during a church conference trip in Nebraska, confessed in a counseling session to an addiction to child sexual abuse material and being sexually aroused by his adoptive daughters. A church member reported the confession, leading to an investigation by authorities.

Searches of Mishler's home and work computers revealed more than 500 images and videos of child sex abuse material.

Following the sentencing, Judge Boyd emphasized that the viewing of such content, especially depicting the abuse of children, is a form of abuse itself. In addition to the prison sentence, Mishler must:

  • Comply with sex offender registration.

  • Not reside or have contact with minors.

  • Pay a $5,000 fine.

Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales stated: "Justice has been served today, and we will continue to prioritize holding those accountable who choose to exploit and abuse children." The prosecution was led by Assistant Criminal District Attorney Andrea Crespo.
