Over the past two weeks, Hays County deputies have successfully recovered four stolen vehicles linked to VIN-swapping schemes, an ongoing tactic used by criminals to disguise stolen cars.
Two Toyota vehicles were sold to unsuspecting buyers after being VIN-swapped and were listed on Facebook Marketplace. Deputies also located a stolen Ram TRX, along with a stolen U-Haul tow dolly connected to the scheme. A Chevy vehicle linked to similar activity remains under investigation.
Hays County authorities are reminding the community to exercise caution when purchasing vehicles:
Verify the origin of the vehicle and carefully review all paperwork.
Always lock your vehicles.
Never leave keys inside.
Research vehicles before completing a purchase.
The sheriff’s office commended deputies for their thorough work in recovering the stolen vehicles and helping to keep the community safe.
