Neighbor Sentenced to 30 Years for 2023 San Antonio Murder

SAN ANTONIO — Judge Kristina Escalona sentenced David Grejtak to 30 years in prison this week for the murder of his neighbor, Lydia Morales. The sentencing took place in the 186th District Court.

The case stemmed from a September 2023 confrontation in which Grejtak argued with Morales’ son-in-law. The altercation ended with Morales being fatally shot. Grejtak later claimed self-defense, alleging he believed Morales intended to stab him.

The case first went to trial in May 2025, but a mistrial was declared after the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. A newly empaneled jury later found Grejtak guilty, concluding the evidence did not support his claim of justification.

Assistant Criminal District Attorney Melissa Rust led the prosecution with support from Victim Advocate Laura Covarrubias and Investigator Jim Cheatham.

“Though today’s sentencing is a painful reminder of an act of senseless violence, it proves that we will never waver in our fight for justice,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “I would like to thank the jury for their diligent efforts in securing this conviction, and our team for their dedication in achieving a just decision that can bring some measure of closure to Lydia’s loved ones.”
