30-Year Prison Sentence Handed Down in 2022 San Antonio Murder

Defendant: Fernando Gonzalez Canedo

SAN ANTONIO -- Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl sentenced Fernando Gonzalez Canedo to 30 years in prison this week for the murder of Luis Mario Garcia. The sentencing took place in the 175th District Court.

In December 2022, San Antonio police found Garcia lying in the street on the city’s northeast side with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.

Surveillance video captured Canedo in a white vehicle near the scene just before the shooting and showed him fleeing afterward. Investigators later determined he staged a fake robbery about five miles away, claiming he had been shot. Cell phone data, social media records, and DNA evidence ultimately linked Canedo to Garcia’s murder.

Assistant Criminal District Attorney Madeline Flosi and First Assistant Tamara Strauch prosecuted the case with support from Victim Advocate Helen Yruegas and Investigator Albert Lopez.

“This senseless act of violence took the life of Mr. Garcia,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “Thanks to the dedicated work of law enforcement and prosecutors, we are holding the person responsible accountable. Our office is committed to ensuring that violent offenders face the consequences of their actions.”
