Atascosa County Deputy Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash; Suspect Arrested

JOURDANTON, TX – An Atascosa County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured Tuesday evening, September 2, after a hit-and-run crash involving a suspect out on bond for aggravated robbery.

The crash happened at the intersection of Highway 16 and FM 3350, just north of Jourdanton. According to investigators, video evidence shows that 44-year-old Abel Peña of Pleasanton ran a red light and struck the deputy’s marked patrol vehicle. At the time, the deputy was not responding to a call and was simply traveling northbound on Hwy 16.

Peña fled the scene in his heavily damaged vehicle. A short time later, Pleasanton Police officers spotted him driving at a high rate of speed and conducted a traffic stop. He was arrested by the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office and charged with Fail to Stop and Render Aid with Injuries, a felony offense.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office extended its gratitude to the Pleasanton Police Department and the Texas Highway Patrol for their assistance and added: “We wish our Deputy a speedy recovery!”
