Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Assault on Bexar County Jail Deputy

John Castillo

42-year-old John Henry Castillo was sentenced this week to 30 years in prison by Judge Sid Harle in the 290th District Court for assaulting a public servant during a jail transfer in March 2024.

The incident occurred when officers from the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) were moving Castillo between jail units. During the process, Castillo spat on the officers, prompting deputies to place a spit mask on him as a safety measure. Despite this precaution, Castillo bit through the spit mask and inflicted a severe injury on a deputy’s forearm.

The deputy required immediate medical evaluation and treatment for the bite wound, which caused long-lasting scarring.

The prosecution was led by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Natasha Patel and Ross Lewis, supported by Victim Advocates Amanda Vasquez and Investigator Jose Niño.

Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales stated, “As a community, we safeguard those who serve as our public servants. This sentencing clearly illustrates our commitment to addressing assaults on jail guards with the seriousness they deserve, ensuring that justice is served for the brave individuals who serve our community.”
