Voice Actor Jonathan Joss Shot and Killed Outside Former Home in San Antonio; Was it a Hate Crime?

Arrested: Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, at approximately 7:02 p.m., San Antonio Police responded to a shooting in progress in the 200 block of Dorsey Drive on the city’s south side. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Life-saving measures were performed, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified as 59-year-old Jonathan Joss Gonzales, known professionally as Jonathan Joss, a voice actor best known for voicing the character John Redcorn on the animated series King of the Hill.

Witnesses provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle and the direction it fled. Officers apprehended the suspect approximately one block from the scene. He was identified as 59-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez.

Alvarez was booked into the Bexar County Jail with bond set at $200,000.

In a public social media post, Gonzales’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, said the shooting occurred while the couple was checking the mail at the site of their former residence, which he said had been previously burned down following two years of alleged harassment and threats. He claimed that the suspect yelled homophobic slurs before opening fire, fatally striking Gonzales, who he said pushed him out of the way to protect him.

The San Antonio Police Department issued a statement on Monday afternoon, addressing speculation that the murder was a hate crime. The department stated:

“SAPD Homicide is currently investigating the murder of Mr. Jonathan Joss. Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss’s murder was related to his sexual orientation. SAPD investigators handle these allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
