A jury in the 226th District Court in Bexar County last week convicted Darius Greenwood of Burglary of a Habitation, resulting in a significant 35-year prison sentence imposed by Judge Benjamin Robertson.
The burglary took place in July 2023, when Greenwood broke into an apartment and stole two rugs from a resident. Upon confrontation by authorities, Greenwood admitted to stealing other items but denied taking the rugs.
The prosecution was able to pursue an enhanced sentence due to Greenwood's prior criminal history, which includes a conviction for the sexual assault of a child in September 2021. This allowed them to seek a sentence well beyond the typical 2 to 20-year range for burglary.
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Brandon Prater and Cassandra Rosales led the prosecution, with support from Victim Advocate Brandy Jimenez and Investigator Jorge Felan.
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales emphasized the seriousness of the crime, stating, "Burglary is more than a property crime—it's a violation of someone's sense of safety and security. Our office takes all crimes seriously, and we will continue to pursue justice at every level."
