The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture today unveiled “City Lights,” two nearly 19-foot sculptures created by local artist team R&R&R (Robert Diaz de Leon, Ronny Eckels, and Ryan Takaba). The sculptures are now installed at 100 W. Houston Street, in front of City Tower, the headquarters for the City of San Antonio’s operations.
Krystal Jones, Director of the Department of Arts & Culture, described the project as a reflection of its surroundings, blending history, culture, native plants and wildlife, and lighting to mirror San Antonio’s city lights. She added that the new sculptures enhance the City Tower entrance, offering a warm welcome to visitors seeking City services while celebrating the unique spirit and artistry of the community.
R&R&R chose Pecos Red for the lamp posts to honor the historic architecture of downtown San Antonio. The Yucca blossoms on the lanterns, native to the area, symbolize protection. Steel and bronze butterflies and vines, inspired by the Queen’s Wreath plant, represent local flora and migrating butterflies.
In a joint statement, the artist team R&R&R expressed their hope that “City Lights” will inspire visitors to downtown with a design rooted in San Antonio's historic traditions while looking towards the City's bright future. They likened the series of butterflies atop the sculptures to the way they hope people will be drawn to their light.
