Schertz Man Arrested After Armed Robbery, Shooting Spree


Derrick R. Escobar, 45, of Schertz, was arrested on February 25, 2025, after an armed robbery, a shooting spree, and a standoff with police.

At approximately 11:35 p.m., Schertz Police responded to reports of an armed robbery at the H-E-B located at 17460 I-35 North, where a vehicle was stolen at gunpoint.

While taking the robbery report, officers received reports of gunfire in the 2900 block of Candleberry Drive. Upon arrival, officers heard additional shots being fired.

With the assistance of the Cibolo Police Department, who deployed a drone, officers located Escobar in the 1600 block of Yucca Park. He was actively shooting at vehicles, residences, and the drone.

Officers made contact with Escobar, who surrendered without further incident. He was found to be in possession of two handguns and wearing body armor and appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis.

Escobar will face the following charges:

  • Aggravated Robbery (First-degree felony)
  • Impersonating a Public Servant (Third-degree felony)
  • Deadly Conduct (Third-degree felony)
  • Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (State Jail Felony)

He was also taken into custody on an Emergency Detention application related to a previous report earlier in the day.

Escobar was transported to Guadalupe County Jail.

Police Chief Jim Lowery stated that no one was injured during the incident, but multiple vehicles and residences were damaged by gunfire. Residents in the area are asked to check their homes and vehicles for damage and to contact Detective McMath at 210-619-1241 with any information or video footage.

The investigation is ongoing.
