In preparation for the upcoming total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly has implemented a limited burn ban and a no dig order. The burn ban will be effective from 12 a.m. on April 5 until noon on Wednesday, April 10, prohibiting any open-air flames, sparks, or embers. Simultaneously, the no dig order requires all public and private entities to suspend underground construction operations during the same period.
Located in the direct path of the total solar eclipse, Kerr County anticipates a significant increase in population, potentially doubling or even tripling its normal 53,000 residents. Concerns over the resulting traffic congestion, strain on emergency responders, medical facilities, food and fuel supplies, and infrastructure prompted the initial disaster declaration.
The declaration grants the county the authority to take necessary actions to ensure the safety of residents and critical infrastructure. Judge Kelly, along with the county commissioners' court, fully supports the burn ban and no dig order as precautionary measures to mitigate potential risks associated with the influx of visitors and heightened demand on resources during the celestial event.
