U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) has announced a significant step forward in improving connectivity between San Antonio's Eastside and Downtown. The announcement came on March 13, 2024, as Congressman Cuellar disclosed $2,960,000 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for this purpose.
The funding aims to address longstanding challenges faced by neighborhoods in San Antonio's historic Eastside, primarily due to their separation from Downtown by Interstate 37. Congressman Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, expressed his satisfaction with the allocation, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on approximately 10,600 Eastside residents. The grant is expected to enhance access to employment, healthcare facilities, and recreational opportunities in the city center.
The funding originates from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Neighborhood Access and Equity Grant Program, which focuses on bridging gaps in underserved and low-income communities while addressing environmental concerns. Notably, this grant program was established through the Inflation Reduction Act, a legislative effort championed by Dr. Cuellar in 2022.
The federal grant will finance a conceptual design and planning study aimed at addressing both physical barriers and social implications caused by Interstate 37. Currently, the highway serves as a significant divider, separating the Eastside from vital community hubs, educational institutions, job opportunities, and essential services. The Eastside has been designated as a Promise Zone, with various ongoing initiatives dedicated to advancing community development and services.
