San Antonio residents looking to enrich their gardens and reduce waste will have the opportunity to snag free compost starting on February 28. The City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) is hosting the event at the Bitters Brush Recycling Center, situated at 1800 Wurzbach Pkwy.
Residents can pick up the compost between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the designated day. However, due to limited quantities, each person will be restricted to one truckload of compost. For those without trucks, bringing bags or containers is acceptable for hauling away the compost. It is essential to ensure that all loads are properly covered with a tarp for transportation safety, and attendees are encouraged to wear safety vests.
The compost provided is sourced from the City’s green cart program and is made available through sponsorship from Atlas Organics. Residents interested in obtaining additional compost beyond the free allocation may purchase it directly from Atlas Organics at their location on 8963 Nelson Rd. Atlas Organics has collaborated with the City of San Antonio to develop an impressive composting facility, capable of processing approximately 125,000 tons per year of yard waste and food waste. This facility plays a crucial role in managing waste from the SWMD’s green cart program. For further details, residents can visit AtlasOrganics.net.
While the event aims to provide a beneficial service to residents, it's important to note that the City and its partners will not be liable for any vehicle damage or injuries incurred during the event. Moreover, the SWMD operates four bulky item drop-off centers, including the Bitters Brush Recycling Center, which are open Tuesday through Saturday. Residents can find more information about these locations by visiting SArecycles.org.
