San Antonio Appoints New Director of Transportation

The City of San Antonio is delighted to announce Catherine “Cat” Hernandez as the new Director of Transportation, effective immediately. Hernandez, who previously served as Interim Director for the Transportation Department since May 2023, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to her new role.

During her tenure as Interim Director, Hernandez demonstrated outstanding leadership in planning, directing, and overseeing operations within the Transportation Department. Notable achievements include her pivotal role in administering the Department’s SS4A grant initiative for the Zarzamora Road corridor and her contributions to re-envisioning the Vision Zero Action Plan and Complete Streets policy, aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing traffic fatalities.

City Manager Erik Walsh expressed confidence in Hernandez's leadership, stating, "I am confident that Catherine’s leadership will continue to drive positive change and innovation within the Transportation Department. Her commitment to safety, sustainable transportation, and community development aligns seamlessly with the City's vision for a vibrant and interconnected future."

Hernandez is known for her advocacy for sustainable and safe transportation. She has been instrumental in leading efforts to update and create a robust Bike Network Plan, aimed at fostering safer bike facilities throughout the city. Additionally, she is spearheading the development of a Transit Oriented Development plan for VIA’s upcoming Green Line along San Pedro Avenue.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Hernandez said, "I am humbled by the support of leadership, especially the City Manager’s Office, in allowing me to continue in the role as Director of Transportation. I am committed to making sure everyone, regardless of their mobility challenges, can travel safely and comfortably in San Antonio."

With over 20 years of dedicated service to the City of San Antonio across various departments, Hernandez holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from St. Mary's University. Her appointment is expected to further advance the City's transportation initiatives and contribute to its continued growth and development.
