San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has adhered to its Critical Incident Video Release Procedure by making public videos related to an officer-involved shooting that unfolded on Thursday, January 18th, 2024.
The incident took place at the 700 block of Southcross, where two SAPD officers were traveling together in a marked patrol vehicle. They initiated a traffic stop due to a violation. Officer Edgardo Valladares engaged with the driver and requested them to exit the vehicle after detecting the scent of marijuana emanating from it. However, the driver refused and initiated physical resistance against the officers as they tried to restrain him.
Amidst the altercation, one officer spotted a handgun in possession of the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Jervon Harper. Concerned for their safety, both officers drew their duty weapons. Subsequently, Officer Valladares discharged a single round, striking Harper. Harper was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared deceased later on. Officer Valladares, with three years of service, was involved in the incident.

The District Attorney’s Office will be overseeing a review of the circumstances surrounding this officer-involved shooting, as is customary protocol in such cases.
