Rapid Rise of San Antonio Creeks Endangers Lives; Several Homeless Individuals Swept Away

San Antonio experienced heavy rainfall on Sunday night and into Monday morning, January 22, causing creeks and rivers to rise rapidly. This led to hazardous driving and walking conditions on various city roadways.

In the vicinity of El Monte Boulevard intersecting with I-10, where Martinez Creek flows, several homeless individuals were reportedly camping in drainage tunnels. According to early reports, five or six people were swept away by the fast moving water resulting from Monday morning's downpour.

The San Antonio Fire Department quickly responded to the situation, launching a rescue mission. Firefighters, equipped with ropes and tied to anchors, entered the drainage tunnels. They called out to potential survivors and utilized a boat to search for individuals who may have been swept away.
