Welfare Check Leads to Discovery of Body and Arrest in San Antonio Apartment

San Antonio police reported that a welfare check on Friday, January 19,2024 led to the discovery of the body of an 85-year-old man and an injured 57-year-old woman. The incident occurred at a Northwest Side apartment complex in the 7900 block of Pipers Creek around 5:40 p.m. Officers, responding to the welfare check, knocked on the door but received no response.

Unable to enter the residence, police sought assistance from maintenance staff at the complex. Together, they entered the apartment and heard the woman crying for help. Upon locating her, officers discovered the lifeless body of the 85-year-old man. In a nearby room, James Barber, 45, was found.

Barber was subsequently arrested and is facing charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
