A man has been fatally shot by a San Antonio police officer during a confrontation involving a firearm, as reported by Police Chief William McManus.

The deceased individual has been identified as 34-year-old Ruben Garcia, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. at the Winston Square Apartments, located in the 2500 block of South General McMullen Drive, in close proximity to Billy Mitchell Boulevard and Kennedy Park on the city's Southwest Side. Police Chief William McManus disclosed that an officer was patrolling the area when he observed a man displaying a handgun tucked into his waistband while interacting with another person. The officer attempted to intervene, but the man fled into the apartment complex.

During the pursuit, Chief McManus stated that Garcia was unsuccessfully subdued with a Taser weapon, leading to a physical struggle over the firearm. Eventually, the officer stepped back and discharged his weapon, resulting in Garcia's death at the scene.

The San Antonio Police Department has initiated an investigation into the incident and will be reviewing body camera footage to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
