Two San Antonio police officers were shot and hospitalized following their response to a domestic disturbance call, where a suspect threatened to set a home on fire, according to authorities.
The incident unfolded near Loop 1604 and Nacogdoches when the officers arrived at the scene. SAPD Chief William McManus reported that one officer was shot multiple times by the unidentified suspect, who was firing a long gun from the second floor of the home. The second officer was shot once and managed to return to his vehicle, where he shielded himself, retrieved his rifle, and returned fire. Additional law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene and successfully rescued both officers.
The two injured officers, one of whom had served with the SAPD for two years and the other for seven, sustained serious injuries, as stated by Chief McManus. He added, "The officers were very, very lucky they weren't killed. Officers don't know what they're going to encounter when they're out there, and officers' actions are predicated on the actions of the person that they're dealing (with)."
Before the police arrived, Chief McManus explained that the suspect had gone to the residence to retrieve his children, leading to an altercation. The suspect subsequently threatened to set the house on fire after dousing it with gasoline. The suspect is expected to face charges of attempted capital murder.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
