SAPD Releases Video of Officer-Involved Shooting of Man Burglary Suspect Holding Machete

In accordance with their established procedure, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has released video footage of a critical incident that took place on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

The incident unfolded as follows:

Around 9:30 p.m., SAPD received multiple 911 calls reporting a male suspect involved in theft from a restaurant's storage area, who was reportedly armed with both a gun and a machete. In response to these calls, officers were dispatched to the location.

The suspect attempted to evade officers by jumping the fence from the restaurant into a nearby apartment complex. Within the apartment complex, an employee confronted the suspect, at which point the suspect brandished a machete and began threatening the employee. The suspect continued to flee through the apartment complex with stolen backpacks in his possession.

During the pursuit, as an officer sought to apprehend the suspect, the suspect suddenly tripped and fell to the ground, with an employee in close proximity. The suspect stood up, holding the machete in his right hand, and disregarded the officer's repeated commands to stop and drop the weapon. Concerned that the suspect posed a threat to others with the machete, the officer discharged two rounds, striking the suspect. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene, and no other individuals were injured during the incident.

The suspect was identified as 46-year-old Jesus Hernandez.

As is standard in all officer-involved shootings, the District Attorney's Office is currently conducting a review of the incident.
