Inmate Found Dead at Bexar County Adult Detention Center

Manuel Perez

On September 29, 2023, a 33-year-old male inmate, Manuel Perez, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center during routine face-to-face observation checks conducted by the unit deputy around 11:40 a.m. The deputy initiated a code one blue for immediate assistance and administered CPR in an attempt to revive the inmate.

Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, arriving at 11:58 a.m., but they pronounced Perez deceased at 12:15 p.m.

While the exact cause of death will be determined by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office, preliminary investigations suggest that Perez's medical episode was a result of natural causes.

In line with standard procedure, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Internal Affairs (IA), and The Public Integrity Unit (PIU) have launched an investigation into the incident. Additionally, adhering to the Sandra Bland Act, the Bexar County Constable’s Office Precinct 2 has been notified and is conducting its own investigation. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has also been informed about the inmate's death.

It is crucial to note that all face-to-face observation checks were conducted according to established policies and procedures before the unit deputy discovered Perez in distress. The deceased inmate had been identified as Manuel Perez, who had been booked into the detention center on September 24 for Assault Bodily Injury-Married.
