CRYSTAL CITY, Texas - A driver escaped into the brush after leading a Crystal City police officer on a high-speed pursuit in a pickup truck believed to have been stolen, authorities said.
The pursuit began Aug. 1 when Crystal City Police Officer A. Elizondo attempted to stop a white Chevrolet 2500 near U.S. Highway 83 and West Kinney Street.
Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated and fled south on U.S. Highway 83 at high speeds before turning onto Farm-to-Market Road 191.
The pursuit ended when the suspect abandoned the pickup near FM 1918 and fled on foot into nearby brush.
Officer Elizondo and Dimmit County Sheriff's Deputy Rubio tracked the suspect through the area for approximately 2.5 miles before locating the abandoned truck. Authorities did not say whether the suspect was found or taken into custody.
Investigators determined the pickup was displaying fictitious Texas license plates and exhibited several indicators commonly associated with stolen vehicles, including a punched-out driver's side door handle and a damaged ignition.
Officials also determined the registration sticker on the truck indicated it had been registered in Bexar County.
The Crystal City Police Department thanked the Dimmit County Sheriff's Office, particularly Deputy Rubio, and the Zavala County Sheriff's Office for assisting during the pursuit and search.
The investigation remains ongoing.
