SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A Bexar County man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to his role in the 2023 murder of Duniel Valladares Fernandez, bringing the prosecution of both defendants in the case to a close.
On July 23, 2026, Adis Hernandez-Rivas was sentenced in the 187th District Court by Judge Stephanie Boyd. Hernandez-Rivas was the co-defendant of Marco Antonio Moreno Vasquez, who was previously convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the killing.
According to prosecutors, law enforcement officers responded to a shooting in February 2023 and found Fernandez suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Officers and emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Fernandez died at the scene.
The investigation determined that Hernandez-Rivas and Moreno Vasquez confronted Fernandez over a financial dispute. Evidence presented during the investigation showed Moreno Vasquez provided Hernandez-Rivas with a firearm and instructed him to shoot during the confrontation.
Surveillance video captured the shooting and proved instrumental in the investigation, providing detectives with images of the suspects and the license plate of the vehicle they used to flee the scene.
A few days later, law enforcement officers in Atascosa County located the suspect vehicle during a traffic stop. Hernandez-Rivas and Moreno Vasquez were identified and taken into custody.
Investigators later recovered the murder weapon from Moreno Vasquez's residence, where it had been hidden inside a refrigerator among food items. Ballistics testing confirmed the firearm matched shell casings recovered at the homicide scene.
Hernandez-Rivas accepted responsibility for his actions by entering into a plea agreement, concluding the prosecution of both men charged in the murder of Fernandez.
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Meghan Galloway and Lauren Espinoza prosecuted the case with assistance from Victim Advocate Rose Perez and Investigator Rudy Rangel.
"This case demonstrates that everyone who plays a role in a violent crime will be held accountable," Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement. "Today's sentence brings another measure of justice for Duniel Valladares Fernandez and his loved ones. I want to thank our prosecutors, investigators, victim advocate, and our law enforcement partners for their dedication and commitment to seeing this case through to its conclusion."
