San Antonio Police Union Will Not Pursue Vote of No Confidence Against Chief McManus

The San Antonio Police Officers’ Association (SAPOA) announced that, after careful consideration and input from its membership, it will not move forward with a formal vote of no confidence against Chief William McManus.

In a statement issued on behalf of SAPOA President Danny Diaz, the union emphasized that while no formal action will be taken in the new year, the discussions surrounding the potential vote have highlighted ongoing concerns among officers. Diaz stated that any future decisions regarding Chief McManus are ultimately the responsibility of the City Manager and expressed hope that the process encourages reflection, renewed focus on officer morale, and strengthened leadership and support for San Antonio’s police officers.

SAPOA provided clarity on its internal process for handling the matter:

  • In November, a no-confidence vote was initially petitioned by a union director.

  • The board decided to bring the matter back to membership for thoughtful consideration before making a decision at the December 11, 2025 board meeting.

  • During that meeting, a motion was made and seconded not to pursue a vote of no confidence. Discussion referenced a 2016 no-confidence vote, which ultimately did not result in any change in leadership.

  • Out of 35 directors, 34 voted against pursuing the vote, with only one director in favor.

The union stressed its commitment to member-led decision-making, transparency, and unity, noting that tactics used by previous administrations no longer apply in today’s environment. SAPOA aims to continue fostering a strong, cohesive organization focused on supporting the men and women serving the San Antonio community.
