SAN ANTONIO, TX - A tense standoff unfolded Tuesday afternoon, December 9th, after a man opened fire on Bexar County Precinct 4 Constable Deputies who were serving an eviction notice at an East Side apartment complex.
The shooting happened at the Artisan at Willow Springs Apartment Homes in the 500 block of Gembler Road. Deputies had been working with building maintenance to gain entry to the unit when the suspect, described as a 49-year-old white male, began firing a handgun from inside the apartment.
One deputy constable was struck in the body armor but remained on scene and is expected to recover.
Deputies pulled back, and both BCSO SWAT and San Antonio Police SWAT teams responded. Surrounding apartments were evacuated as a safety precaution, and the area was shut down for several hours while officers established a perimeter. The suspect continued firing shots from inside the apartment during the setup, although it was not clear if he was shooting at the walls or floors.
SWAT teams deployed tear gas, eventually prompting the suspect to come out and surrender without further injuries. Sheriff Javier Salazar announced at 5:55 p.m. that the suspect was in custody and that there was no continuing threat to the public.
The suspect is expected to face charges including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer, though additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues. Authorities also noted the man is believed to have a military background.
No other injuries were reported. The investigation remains active.
