This week, Derrick Coles was sentenced to 45 years in prison by Judge Joel Perez in the 437th District Court following his conviction for serious bodily injury to a child.
Coles’ son, Danilo, suffered fatal injuries after being forced to perform strenuous physical exercises and spanked as punishment. At just 50 pounds, Danilo collapsed in the shower and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. An autopsy revealed multiple bruises, burns, and abrasions inconsistent with a simple fall, concluding that his death resulted from physical exertion and exhaustion.
The prosecution was led by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Willem VanZeben and Ana Rocha, with support from Victim Advocate Alex Ornelas and Investigator Brian Petree.
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said, “Protecting children will always be of utmost importance to us, and we will continue to fight on their behalf.”
