On October 9, 2025, several Texas Department of Public Safety personnel were recognized during the October meeting of the Public Safety Commission at DPS Headquarters in Austin. DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin, along with PSC Chairman Steven P. Mach and other commissioners, presented two Director’s Citations and four Lifesaving Awards to distinguished officers.
Among the honorees, Corporal Erick De Leon of San Antonio received a Director’s Citation for his outstanding dedication to criminal interdiction and emergency medical response throughout 2024. His efforts included seizing significant quantities of drugs, confiscating over 61 weapons linked to criminal activity, investigating vehicles involved in “engine swaps,” apprehending a homicide suspect, and making approximately 220 arrests, including fugitives from justice.
In addition to his law enforcement achievements, Corporal De Leon demonstrated exceptional emergency medical skills. He efficiently treated a man with an abdominal gunshot wound, responded to a suicide attempt involving a firearm, stabilized a 16-year-old drive-by shooting victim, and applied a tourniquet to a female shooting victim’s leg, ensuring all survived until EMS arrived.
Colonel Martin praised De Leon’s bravery and professionalism, stating, “Their stories inspire us, and we thank them for all they do – every day – as they make a difference in the lives of so many Texans.” Corporal De Leon’s recognition highlights the life-saving impact and dedication of DPS officers in protecting communities across Texas.
