NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Sean Castrejana, 54, of San Antonio, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and 10 years for Assault – Family Violence by Impeding Breath or Circulation, with the sentences to run concurrently.
Castrejana was found guilty by a Comal County jury on May 21, 2025, and elected to have punishment assessed by the court. On July 8, 2025, Judge Stephanie Bascon of the 466th District Court handed down the sentence. The court also entered findings that the offenses involved both a deadly weapon and family violence.
The case began when the New Braunfels Police Department responded to a call from employees at the New Braunfels Smokehouse, who reported a naked man in a creek fighting with a woman. Officers arrived to find Castrejana and the female victim in the creek behind the business.
The victim, Castrejana’s former common-law wife of 17 years, told investigators that after an unusual series of events, Castrejana dragged her by the hair into the water and held her in a chokehold, forcing her underwater. Witnesses, including a manager from the Smokehouse, intervened by striking Castrejana in the head with a mop handle, allowing the victim to escape.
Both the victim and the manager testified at trial, stating they believed the victim would have died without the intervention.
The case was prosecuted by Jessica Frazier and Sarah Van Sciver, with support from DA Investigator Jonathan Patrick and Victim Assistance Coordinator Angela Sky.
