Jury Convicts Man Who Shot San Antonio Police Officer

Dominick Rubio

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas—A Bexar County jury has found Dominick Rubio guilty of aggravated assault on a public servant, leading to a 50-year prison sentence.

Rubio was sentenced by Judge Frank Castro in the 399th District Court. The case stems from an incident in September 2023, when San Antonio Police Officer Bernal-Rodriguez was attempting to execute an arrest warrant for Rubio on a separate aggravated assault charge. During a foot pursuit, Rubio fired a shotgun, striking the officer in the stomach and arm.

The prosecution was led by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Joshua Luke Sandoval and Venessa Smithwick-Garcia.

"Today's sentence emphasizes our commitment to the safety of our community, as well as those who are sworn to protect it," said Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales. "We are thankful for the partnerships that we have with our local law enforcement agencies and are grateful to have removed yet another habitual offender from our streets."
