CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Corpus Christi Police and Fire Departments successfully rescued a man in crisis from the old Harbor Bridge late Friday night, July 25, after a two-hour operation.
Officers were dispatched to the bridge at 11:52 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from a man under the structure who said he was in crisis. Upon arrival, officers established communication with the man by phone.
The Corpus Christi Police Department's Hostage Negotiation Team and the Corpus Christi Fire Department's Rescue Unit were called to the scene. An officer from the Hostage Negotiation Team and two medics geared up in harnesses and climbed over the railing to continue communicating with the subject under the bridge.
After two hours of patient and compassionate communication, the man agreed to climb back over the railing to safety. He was met by an officer on top of the bridge and provided with resources to assist him.
The Corpus Christi Police Department highlighted the incident as an example of the effective and collaborative work of first responders, noting that multiple resources and agencies came together to ensure the safety of the subject and all those involved.
