A gunman identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, 27, was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents after he opened fire on a federal building housing Border Patrol operations connected to the McAllen International Airport earlier today, Tuesday, July 8, 2025. The brazen attack left McAllen Police Officer Ismael Garcia, a 10-year veteran, injured with a gunshot wound to the knee. Officer Garcia is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.
The incident unfolded around 6 a.m. Mosqueda, armed with an assault rifle and carrying a utility vest with additional ammunition, fired dozens of rounds at law enforcement personnel. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez stated that another officer and one Border Patrol employee also sustained injuries from flying glass as bullets shattered windows within the facility.
Mosqueda was reportedly driving a vehicle with Michigan license plates, which was spray-painted in what authorities believe to be Latin. It is being reported that Mosqueda was reported missing from a Weslaco location, approximately 18 miles east of McAllen, around 4 a.m., though the nature of his ties to the community remains undisclosed.
The FBI has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. Flights at the nearby McAllen International Airport were delayed for several hours as law enforcement secured the area.
Authorities expressed gratitude that no other officers or agents were seriously injured and extended thoughts and prayers for Officer Garcia's speedy recovery.
