San Antonio Man Sentenced to 45 Years for Killing Wife

Carlos Portillo

44-year-old Carlos Portillo was sentenced to 45 years in prison on June 27 by Judge Ron Rangel of the 379th District Court for the murder of his wife.

On January 29, 2024, San Antonio Police responded to a disturbance call and found Portillo outside his apartment covered in blood and acting erratically. Inside the residence, officers discovered his wife dead from a gunshot wound. Illegal narcotics were also recovered from Portillo at the scene.

An investigation revealed Portillo’s extensive criminal record dating back to 1998, including charges for evading arrest, assault causing bodily injury, burglary of a vehicle, and burglary of a habitation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Michelle Haden and Ana Rocha, with support from Victim Advocate Alexis Smith and Investigator Kyle Scott.

“The horrific act of taking a loved one's life cannot go unpunished,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “This sentence reflects our office's commitment to justice, accountability, and the families impacted by these devastating crimes.”
