A 19-year-old woman was killed early Sunday morning in a head-on collision involving a suspected drunk driver on Highway 173.
At approximately 1:40 a.m. on May 25, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 22-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet Camaro southbound when he crossed into the northbound lane for unknown reasons, striking a northbound Kia head-on.
The driver of the Kia, identified as 19-year-old Valerie Mireles of Bandera, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers determined the male driver of the Camaro was intoxicated. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Intoxication Manslaughter.
Mireles’ grandmother confirmed her death and has organized a GoFundMe campaign to assist Valerie’s mother with funeral expenses.
The investigation is ongoing.
