Bandera Area Libraries Launch Summer Reading Adventures with BEC Donation

Local libraries across the Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) service area are gearing up for a summer of learning and imagination, supported by a $6,250 donation from BEC. The funds, divided evenly among five libraries, will support free reading programs designed to engage children and families throughout the community.

Each of the five participating libraries—Medina Community Library, Lakehills Area Library, Bandera Kronkosky Public Library, Comfort Public Library, and Real County Public Library—received $1,250 to enhance their summer reading initiatives. The programs offer an opportunity for children to stay mentally active during the summer break and continue developing literacy skills.

At Medina Community Library, Director Alison Harbour said this year’s theme, “TEXAS ADVENTURES,” allows children to connect with local culture and nature. “When they read about Texas animals, the rodeo, the Alamo, and insects, they’ll already have a great background and will understand what they are reading,” Harbour explained.

Lakehills Area Library is also welcoming young readers with open doors and weekly learning opportunities. “It’s free family entertainment that combines learning with fun,” said Library Director Dianna Landes. “Every week, children can come in, learn something new, and have a great time.”

Bandera Kronkosky Public Library Director Paul A. Phelan emphasized the long-term benefits. “Summer reading helps children maintain and even improve their reading skills while developing a lifelong love of reading,” he said.

Comfort Public Library’s summer program is focusing on creativity. “We invite you to embark on a journey of art and creativity, celebrating how art enriches our lives,” said Programs Coordinator Mary Anne Johnson.

Each library has its own calendar of events and activities. Families are encouraged to check individual library websites for updated schedules and details.

Thanks to BEC’s contribution, families in the area can enjoy an educational and entertaining summer—all while staying cool at the local library.
