Fast Firefighter Response Saves Historic Pearl Bar in Hondo

On Sunday morning, April 27, 2025, the Medina County Fire Department's Station 60 in Hondo responded to a reported structure fire at the historic Pearl Bar.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., Engine 60 and Ladder 61 arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and reported heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the rear corner of the building. Additional assistance was requested from Stations 70 and 10, with crews from D’Hanis and Castroville responding. Medic 8530 was also dispatched to provide EMS support.

Fire crews quickly initiated a fire attack, and the fire was brought under control within 12 minutes of the initial dispatch. The rapid response allowed D’Hanis units to return to service promptly in case of additional calls.

The quick action of firefighters prevented a total loss of the structure. The Pearl Bar, which is over 100 years old, sustained limited damage, and the majority of its contents were saved.
