On May 5, 2024, law enforcement agencies were involved in a high-speed pursuit spanning three counties. The chase began when a Gillespie County deputy attempted to stop a motorcycle traveling at 93 mph on Highway 16. The driver, later identified as Frankie Ortiz Zapata, 22, from Austin, refused to comply and continued south towards Kerr County.
Kerr County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies joined the pursuit as the motorcycle reached speeds ranging from 50 to 120 mph. The chase continued through the 1700 block of Sidney Baker, involving multiple deputies. Despite attempts to stop the suspect, the pursuit stretched over 57 miles until the motorcycle ran out of fuel near the Bandera/Uvalde County line.
Zapata was found near the scene with minor injuries and was subsequently arrested. He faces one count of evading arrest with a vehicle and is currently held at Kerr County jail on a $20,000 bond.
“Cases like this one emphasize the need to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings as you go through your daily drives,” said Sheriff Larry Leitha. “This individual placed the motoring public, himself, and numerous officers in extreme danger. We are pleased to have him off the road and behind bars. Our patrol division did an excellent job in bringing this case to an end without injuries. Dangers can emerge quickly, and we urge the public to stay alert and attentive on our roadways.”
