On Sunday, April 14, 2024, at around 7:00 PM, emergency services including the Comal County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens rushed to Canyon Lake near Overlook Park following reports of a young man submerged underwater who had not resurfaced.
The individual, identified as 19-year-old Roiner Alejandro Rojas Pereira from San Antonio, Texas, was floating on a tube when he drifted towards the water intake near the Canyon Lake Dam. Witnesses recounted that Pereira became separated from his tube and began waving and calling out for assistance. Despite efforts by a bystander who swam from shore to aid him, Pereira disappeared beneath the water's surface and has not been seen since.
First responders arrived at the scene and commenced search operations. As of the time of this report, Pereira has not been located.
The search effort continues with assistance from Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, Hays (SMART) Dive Team, and Comal County Sheriff’s Office Deputies.
UPDATE: On Saturday 20th, at approximately 8:00 am, the body of Roiner Alejandro Rojas Pereira was recovered by Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens near Overlook Park where he was last seen. The family was on scene and notified.
