On December 27, 2023, authorities responded to a shooting incident in the 400 block of French Place in El Paso. Upon arrival, police found a woman, Luz Elena Martinez, who claimed to have shot her husband, 47-year-old Jose Luis Avalos-Reyes, during an altercation.
Martinez, 54, told officers that she acted in self-defense after being attacked by her husband. However, further investigation by the Crimes Against Persons Unit uncovered inconsistencies between Martinez's account and evidence found at the scene.
On March 11, 2024, Martinez was apprehended by the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force at the 5700 block of Alameda on a warrant for murder. She was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
