McAllen Police Respond to Disturbance, Suspect Wounded in Encounter

On March 11, 2024, at 4:28 PM, McAllen Police Officers responded to a disturbance in the 1600 Block of N. Bicentennial Blvd. According to reports, a male wearing a red shirt was observed banging on the window of the McAllen Public Safety Building while holding two knives.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the suspect, identified as Bryan Colunga, 31 years old, in the canopy area outside the building's front lobby doors. Colunga was wielding a knife in each hand.

Officers attempted to verbally engage with Colunga and urged him to drop his weapons, offering assistance. However, Colunga's behavior escalated, prompting officers to use less-than-lethal munitions, specifically pepper balls. Despite these efforts, Colunga threw one knife at officers and charged at another with the remaining knife.

In response to the imminent threat, an officer discharged approximately four rounds from his duty weapon, injuring Colunga in the upper body, leg, and hand. Immediate first aid was administered, and Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene.

Colunga was transported to the hospital for treatment, where he remains under care. The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Officer Kyle Minister, with 3.5 years of service at McAllen PD.
