San Antonio Father Sentenced to 25 Years for Child's Death Due to Serious Bodily Injury

24-year-old Javier Leyva was sentenced to 25 years in prison on March 5, 2024, for charges of Injury to a Child with Serious Bodily Injury. Leyva pleaded guilty to the offense on March 4th, and the sentence was handed down this afternoon by Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl in the 175th District Court.

The incident dates back to May 30, 2021, when Leyva was responsible for caring for his four-month-old twin girls while their mother was at work. One of the twins was subsequently admitted to the hospital with injuries. Medical examinations revealed extensive injuries from this incident, as well as older injuries that were healing. Unfortunately, the child passed away during her hospitalization.

"An innocent child was hurt and subsequently lost her life while in the custody of her father. One of the people who should have loved and cared for her the most is now punished for her death," said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales. "We follow the evidence and uphold justice."
